Dans cette performance, les sons d’un orage se mêlent à du chant grégorien sorti d’on ne sait où. Des conversations se croisent, s’entrechoquent. On rassure le plancher et on chante pour lui, qui porte le poids du monde. On exauce des rêves vocaux et les gazous se transforment en baleines.
Des ateliers d’explorations vocales et spatiales ont servi de matériel pour élaborer un canevas d’improvisation de la performance, qui résulte en une succession de tableaux qui déjouent les attentes du public relativement à la représentation d’une forme chorale. Notre approche du chœur est transdisciplinaire puisqu’elle n’est ni clairement musicale, ni complètement narrative, ni parfaitement chorégraphique, mais tout cela à la fois.
Le collectif est né du projet de maîtrise en théâtre de Jade Préfontaine, artiste-chercheur·euse étudiant à l’UQAM. Les interprètes (et cocréateurices) sont des personnes queers ayant une pratique vocale réunies par l’envie de faire chœur et iels bénéficient de l’apport de la conceptrice sonore Annie Préfontaine.

In this performance, the sounds of a thunderstorm mix with Gregorian chant from who knows where. Conversations cross and clash. We reassure the floor and we sing for it, as it carries the weight of the world. Vocal dreams are fulfilled and kazoos are transformed into whales.
Vocal and spatial explorations we did during some workshops were used as material to develop an improvisational framework for the performance, which results in a succession of tableaux that thwart the audience’s expectations of a choral form. Our approach to the choir is transdisciplinary, as it is neither clearly musical, nor completely narrative, nor perfectly choreographic, but all at once.
The collective was born out of the master’s project in theater by Jade Préfontaine, an artist-researcher studying at UQAM. The performers (and co-creators) are queer people with a vocal practice brought together by the desire to form a weird choir and they benefit from the contribution of the sound designer Annie Préfontaine.
